A security guard or security officer is usually a privately and formally trained person who is paid by a company to protect property, assets, or people.
Often, security officers or security guards are uniformed and act to protect private property by maintaining a high visibility presence to deter unlawful and inappropriate actions, watching (either directly or indirectly, through patrols, or by observing alarm systems or watching video cameras) for signs of crime, fire or disorder; then taking action and reporting any incidents to their client and emergency services as deemed appropriate for the specific situation.
Since at least the Middle Ages in Europe, the terms watchmen or guards were more commonly applied to this function. This term was carried over to North America where it was very similar to a night-watchman until both terms were replaced with the modern security-based titles. Security guards or officers are sometimes regarded as fulfilling a private policing function.
