The IFPO's own Chris Hertig on the need for consistent, constant training by security officers:

Prospective armed security guards in Pennsylvania must successfully achieve Act 235 status, also known as Pennsylvania's Lethal Weapons Training Act, said John Sancenito, president of Information Network Associates, a security firm in Harrisburg.

Certification requires physical, psychological and background testing, in addition to a 40-hour classroom and firing range course. However, there are no legal training requirements for an unarmed security guard, he said.

However, once Act 235 certification is achieved, by law, a guard only has to qualify once every five years to retain it. Some security companies do not pursue additional training, but only do that bare minimum, Sancenito said.

"That's where there's weakness," Hertig said. "There's been a weakness in teaching tactics to police and security personnel ... it's a missing piece."
