The holidays are expected to be a time of joy, but unfortunately with them, come, well, for lack of a better term, mall brawls. It seems like the perfect storm: testosterone-filled teens, on Christmas break, bored when their phones run out of juice, with little to no parental guidance, roaming large retail areas. Across the country, groups of kids fought, and it's a shame the sanctions that followed are retroactive and not proactive:

Teens arrested at Philadelphia mall after melee: The general manager of Philadelphia Mills Mall instructed her security staff that no one under the age of 18 should be allowed inside unless they’re accompanied by an adult. That comes from Philadelphia police who say they were alerted a flash mob.

American malls beefing up security after brawls break out: At least 15 brawls broke out in malls around the country the day after Christmas, as hundreds of teenagers in Ohio, Colorado, North Carolina, Texas, Arizona, and Connecticut were drawn together via social media to participate or just watch the chaos unfold. In the aftermath of the melees, which shut down malls for hours and led to dozens of arrests, mall security and local police are stepping up patrols and considering heightened restrictions on teen shoppers—including bans on youths with no adult guardians.

Arden Fair mall uses new rule in attempt to limit teen brawls: The day after Christmas is one of the busiest shopping days of the year, and as many as 65,000 shoppers poured into Arden Fair on Monday in search of post-holiday sales. Looking to manage the crowd and prevent fights such as the ones that closed the mall early on Dec. 26, 2014, Arden officials on Monday activated a rule that was recently added to the mall’s code of conduct – during periods of high occupancy, security may require minors to be accompanied by adults.
