March 31--Every classroom in Cleveland ISD soon will be equipped with devices that authorities say will stop doors from being breached during active shooter events.

Cleveland ISD Police Chief Rex Evans, accompanied by Steven Squier, coordinator for Multi-County Crime Stoppers, announced during a March 27 press conference that the devices are being funded by Crime Stoppers through a pilot program. Crime Stoppers is purchasing 1,000 Bearacade door-stopping devices, which cost between $60-65 each, for Cleveland ISD and a neighboring school district.

The door stoppers are made of high-quality, reinforced polymer plastic. They work by slipping the bottom of a door into a channel and then dropping an attached metal pin into a hole in the floor.

"It has been shot by numerous handguns and rifles and it did what it was supposed to do. It prevented entry into the building," Evans said of the Bearacade device.

Each one weighs about two pounds and will be mounted inside of every classroom next to doors. After Cleveland ISD maintenance employees drill oversized holes in the floor next to the doors, the items will be operational.

"To open the door, students and teachers simply have to lift the pin out of the hole," Squier said.

Reflective tape on the exterior side of the device could help law enforcement as they sweep a building looking for an active shooter.
