An armed security guard working at Buckeye Bingo fought off a would-be attacker, then shot and killed him just after 12:30 p.m. Wednesday in the parking lot of the business, Waco police Sgt. W. Patrick Swanton said.

A heavy police presence surrounded the local bingo hall, near the intersection of North 24th Street and Colonial Avenue, after the security officer, who works for an area security company, was shot in the hand during the altercation with a masked man, Swanton said.
The man reportedly approached the guard from behind and tried to put his arm around him and reached for the security guard’s gun.
“We were able to determine through witnesses and the security guard that an individual, described as wearing all black, black gloves, black hoodie, black mask, black shoes, and with his face covered, jumped the security guard in the back parking lot,” Swanton said.

“He attempted to get the security guard’s handgun and during that fight for the handgun, the security guard was able to discharge his firearm, and the suspect was injured.”
According to witnesses, the guard fired two shots, one striking the guard’s hand and the second striking the other man in his upper body once. Swanton said the guard suffered an apparent gunshot wound to his hand but did not confirm how many shots were fired.
