Michael S. D'Angelo makes a great case for the importance of attaining certifications in the security industry. We here at the IFPO couldn't agree more. -- IFPO.

I read a post today by a “security consultant” who proclaimed: “that you don’t need professional certifications to prove you are qualified, there are many other ways to gain experience and show you are good at what you do.”

I am not entirely disagreeing with his perspective; however, I will add my thoughts. Having letters after your name doesn’t provide instant credibility. Nor does it mean you are better than other professionals in your industry.

Here is where certification hits its real mark. Any accredited security industry certification (I pictured the CPP from ASIS International as an excellent example, however, there are certainly others of credibility within our industry) has a requirement of continuing education in order to maintain and re-certify.

Get certified and take your security career to the next level!

No other measure shows your true value to a client as a professional than continuing education. You attend seminars and conferences, you go to advanced training, and you write or present within your industry.

You are knowledgeable in current industry best practices and you stay atop your game. That’s what professional certifications demonstrate and that’s what shows clients why you are perhaps that better choice.
