Chris Hertig, IFPO Board member and retired criminal justice professor, makes the case for seeking a security certification in this excellent essay titled "Just Getting By"

I did “the most important thing of the day” and had lunch with some old colleagues last week. These guys have done well for themselves and hold down nice executive positions with a services firm. We discussed professional certifications such as the CPP, CPO and CSSM

I said that too many people in the security business do not have the foundation of knowledge necessary. They don’t understand WAECUP, the physical security planning process or risk management. They are just “floating”.

My one colleage said that“they are just “getting by”.

Is this you or someone in your organization?

Security is not a simple undertaking as it affects all aspects of the environment and asset(s) being protected.

Professional certification processes provide the academic foundation necessary to succeed.

How can one be proficient at protecting others if they don’t have a firm grasp of physical security theory, etc?

Experience alone will not provide this. “Experience may be the best teacher”; but it is all too often the most expensive teacher: we bumble around and learn from our mistakes. At someone’s expense.

And that ain’t professional. No Sir.
