Home security is an important priority for those who wish to avoid burglary this Christmas. One in 10 Britons have a friend or family member who has been burgled.

Now, new research has revealed that Brits are nervous about the security of their property over the festive period. A report by LED Hut, found that 1 in 4 Brits (25%) feel nervous about the security of their property if they are out for the evening or away from home.

They found that lighting ranked higher than any other type of security measure in the study which asked UK homeowners how they aim to keep their homes safe.

Outdoor security light (40 per cent) topped the list of security measures Britons are taking.

Leaving the lights on (27 per cent) and leaving the lights on a timer (31 per cent) - both tactics which lead intruders to believe the house is occupied - are popular choices.

How to prevent burglary
Police.uk recommends numerous ways to prevent break ins.

This includes:

-- Locking doors and windows every time you leave the house, even when you're in the garden.
-- Hide all keys out of sight and away from the letterbox.
-- Install a visual burglar alarm.
-- Install good outside lighting.
