The Powhatan, Va. Sheriff's Office recently posted an inspiring story about Brad Hughes, a former law enforcement officer who has found a new life in the field after a tragic accident left him a double-amputee. Not only is Hughes' story an example to motivate those who have endured under the most dire circumstances, but also serves as a cautionary tale about distracted driving.  -- IFPO.

ABC 8 News covered the story as well, stating Hughes was a security officer as well. He now has a job with the county:

"He’s in charge of community engagement in Powhatan County, which includes presenting new safety ideas, giving presentations about the move over law and distracted driving and teaching students their rights during traffic stops.

“I’m a fighter, I was born a fighter, I’ve been a survivor ever since, and a lot of people call me superman,” Hughes explained."

Here is the news release from the Powhatan County Sheriff's Office:

"We would like introduce Honorary Powhatan Deputy Brad Hughes. As a police officer Deputy Hughes was trained to put his life on the line every day, but the incident that gravely injured him didn’t involve bullets or bad guys.

In 2014 then officer Hughes was responding to a 17 car pileup on an icy road in Chesterfield County when a distracted driver lost control of his truck and hit him. Brad is now a tireless advocate for safe driving and is a much sought after educator.

Tonight Brad will be the keynote speaker at the Virginia Teen Driver Safety Challenge kick-off event to be held at the Greater Richmond Convention Center.

Please help us in congratulating and welcoming Deputy Hughes to the Powhatan County Sheriff’s Office as he continues to educate the public about the very real dangers of distracted driving."
