Charlotte-Mecklenburg homicide detectives have decided that the killing of Julian Anthony Harris, 32, was justified, police said Monday afternoon.

Harris was shot by a security guard at a sweepstakes business on Albemarle Road on Wednesday. Police said Harris and another man entered the business wearing masks, apparently planning to rob it.

Police said Harris pointed a handgun at staff members before the security guard shot him. Harris ran into the woods behind the business, where he was found dead, police said.

The security guard, who has not been identified by police, was taken to CMPD headquarters on Wednesday and interviewed. He was released the same day.

The process isn’t over, however – now, the Mecklenburg District Attorney’s Office will review CMPD’s investigation and make the final decision about whether the shooting was justified.
