WASHINGTON – U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill, the top-ranking Democrat on the Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, praised a decision by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) today to award the St. Louis Cardinals designation under the SAFETY Act, which the Cardinals applied for in July. McCaskill had previously praised the Cards for their increased safety efforts and written a letter of support to DHS.  Designation under the SAFETY Act is first step in being granted full certification.

“I’m thrilled the Department of Homeland Security awarded the Cards a designation under the Safety Act—it’s clear they’re placing the highest priority on protecting their fans, players, and employees.” McCaskill said. “Terror attacks are increasingly occurring around the world on soft targets like stadiums and concert venues, and the Cards are confronting that threat head-on.”

Under the Support Anti-Terrorism by Fostering Effective Technologies Act (SAFETY Act), sports teams, entertainment venues, and other groups can apply for a certification if they put in place anti-terrorism measures. The Cardinals applied for the SAFETY Act certification in July, and have increased security at the stadium through measures including background checks on all staff including outside vendors, creating a new K-9 program, and updating their current security technology.

McCaskill has made combatting terrorism a priority since taking over as the top Democrat on the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee earlier this year, working to emphasize the importance of DHS’s counterterrorism programs, and successfully introducing and passing a bipartisan bill requiring DHS to help protect livestock, limit the spread of contagious diseases, and keep food from being contaminated in the event of terrorist attacks and/or natural disasters.
