KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
An apartment complex security guard shot and killed a man he said approached him with a gun in the early morning hours Tuesday near 94th Terrace and Bales Avenue in Kansas City, Mo.

Officers responded around 1:45 a.m. to Canyon Creek Apartments in reference to a shooting and found a man dead in the parking lot. A security guard at the scene told officers he was eating his lunch in his vehicle, when he was approached by a man who pointed a gun at him.

The security guard, fearing for his life, shot the suspect once. The suspect died at the scene, according to the Kansas City Police Department.

The security guard was not injured in the shooting. He is cooperating with police.

"The security guard was just sitting in his car eating his lunch when the car pulled up to him," said public information officer Darin Snapp. "We've got the security guard downtown. We're talking to him to find out exactly what happened. We're knocking on some doors to see if any witnesses observed it. We're going to try to identify the suspect to find out what his story was and why this happened."

Police identified the suspect as an approximately 20-year-old male, but have no other information about his identity. Police said the security guard's awareness may have saved his life.

"He could have very easily been a sitting duck," Snapp said. "Thankfully he was aware and ready to go. Unfortunately, a shooting happened, but he had to protect himself. But he'll be going home tonight."
