A security guard who was stabbed and killed at a Sylmar grocery store on Sunday by a man allegedly attempting to steal beer has been identified.

The guard has been identified by an uncle as 28-year-old Joe Lopez.

San Fernando police described the man who allegedly fatally stabbed Lopez outside a Food 4 Less as a “transient” and said he was taken into custody.
No information about the suspect’s identify has been released.
“It appears to be a beer run gone bad,” LAPD Officer Taylor McLaws said. “They went in to steal beer and got into some sort of altercation with security.”
