As we enter a new year and a new decade, one can't help but ponder the future. What lies out there in the beyond? How much will things change and what will remain relatively the same? As far as the security industry, we see those changes every year as the IFPO participates in ASIS GSX conference. One prominent question in the industry is undoubtedly what kind of impact will robots have on physical security -- can they duplicate what humans do and will they ultimately replace humans as security officers? The short answer is, not yet. Several years ago, we saw Steve the robot trip and fall into a water fountain, only to be rescued by his human counterparts.

Kidding aside, there appear to be benefits to security robots, as Government Technology discusses Knightscope's roving sentinel: "Around large parking lots, its K5 robots can use their license plate-reading capability to “track dwell time of cars, say, if a car’s been there for three days,” co-founder Stacy Dean Stephens said.

First Security Services makes a point about the spontaneity and inconsistency that can occur in an incident such as a robbery: "For example, unless the algorithms and programming in the robot can handle all of the variables that exist in a multi-person armed robbery attempt, it won’t be able to do as good of a job as a security officer."

In the future, maybe life will imitate art. In Star Wars, we see droids like R2D2 AND C3PO help humans and enhance their lives, but in the end, the humans are the driving force in altering their lives, for better or worse. So possibly the future looks more symbiotic, with robots and humans working together, as Total Security Advisor reports: "In the future, though, it’s possible that unmanned robotics will provide regular and reliable roving patrols in bad neighborhoods, detecting activity, and alerting security personnel in the field in real time."

In the meantime, human security officers need to equip themselves as best they can, both physically and in the classroom. The International Foundation for Protection Officers has a wide range of certifications to advance your career -- so why not get started today.
