WELLSTON • A man from Normandy was charged Friday with shooting a MetroLink security guard at the Wellston station a day earlier.

Charges say Garrett shot a security officer, 29, in the right shoulder with a .380 semi-automatic pistol about 2 p.m. at the station, 6420 Plymouth Avenue. Garrett was then shot and seriously wounded by two St. Louis County officers.

Garrett was shot three times in the buttocks and remained in critical condition Friday.

Police said it happened as the guard tried to prevent the man from boarding a train without a ticket. The two county officers were on the MetroLink train, heard shots and chased Garrett across the street.
“Officers gave Garrett commands to stop but he began running across the street toward an occupied business,” police said in court records. “Fearing for lives of those present in the nearby business and on the MetroLink platform, the officers shot Garrett.” Police did not identify the officers but listed their initials as “K.E.” and “M.H.” in court records.

Police said that they recovered a pistol from Garrett’s jacket pocket and that a projectile found near where the guard was shot was a ballistic match to Garrett’s gun.

Police say they are hoping to contact additional witnesses, including the driver of a car who they said sped off when the running gunman approached. They released a train surveillance photo of that car.
