BIRMINGHAM AL Sept 18 2016 –Police said a security officer shot and killed a driver who hit two people and tried to hit a crowd of others standing outside a Birmingham nightclub.

Preliminary investigation revealed the victim collided with a parked vehicle. He subsequently pinned a man between two vehicles with his foot still on the accelerator.
The victim then disengaged from that vehicle and attempted to collide with other parked vehicles and potential victims. To try and keep others from getting hurt, police say the security officer opened fire on the driver, killing him.
“We are thankful for the heroic actions of the security officer. Further loss of life could have happened, but his quick, responsible actions prevented that.
Now we will try to understand motive or reasoning, if any, behind the victim’s reckless actions,” said Sgt. Bryan Shelton with Birmingham police.
The condition of the victims struck by the vehicle is not known, but they were transported to the hospital.
Police do not know if the security officer was licensed or who he worked for.

The names of the security officer, shooting victim or the injured person have not been released.
